Carl E. Wehde Memorial Award


This award honors Carl E. Wehde, a dedicated Chamber of Commerce member and a key figure in Crystal Lake’s growth. As owner of Wehde Shoes and mayor (1979–91), he shaped the community through leadership and service. He was a Chamber ambassador for 22 years, spent 13 years on the District 47 school board (eight as president), and represented McHenry County on the Pace board. His many contributions earned him numerous community service awards.


CARL E. WEHDE INDIVIDUAL/GROUP OF THE YEAR AWARD CRITERIA:


This award is given to an individual person or group who:

  • is known to have made a verifiable contribution to the quality of life in the greater Crystal Lake area
  • is currently or has been actively engaged and supportive of the Crystal Lake Chamber of Commerce and supports a healthy business community
  • provided inspiration that will have also sparked other people to become intensely involved in efforts to assist the community
  • has been involved in establishing goals for community development seeing them through to fruition
  • should be involved in more than one project area or organization showing leadership in education, community service/government or business for more than 3 years establishing a consistent pattern of public service
  • should be dedicated to the mission of improving opportunities for all people on going beyond that of just providing funds for programs
  • have demonstrated active multi-dimensional interests that have challenged community leaders like Carl E. Wehde
